How to play

Everything on the table is a card. Drag one card onto another and they stack; when a stack matches a recipe, a bar appears above it and, when it fills, out comes the result. Your species (cells, swimmers, creatures, tribespeople, citizens, starships) does the work: stack one on an algae mat, a fruit tree or a timberland to gather, or on materials to craft. A new game asks you to name your species and pick its colour and difficulty; the quests at the top left walk you through the start, and clicking any card shows what it is and what it is for.

The six stages

  • Cell stage (the primordial soup): graze algae, break down debris, collect minerals at the vents, make proteins, lipids and neurons, grow parts such as jaws, spikes and a flagellum, and divide to grow your colony. Goal: grow a proto-brain and stack it with 3 cells on the open sea, where they bond into the first fish.
  • Ocean stage (the ancient sea): graze kelp, catch krill, hunt trilobites and nautiluses, search the coral reef for calcium and ideas for parts (teeth, scales, a tail fin, a lantern), and spawn in the spawning bed. Jellyfish and anomalocaris attack, and later an armoured dunkleosteus. Goal: gulp air at the surface to grow a lung, grow two lobed fins, and stack them with 3 swimmers on the shoreline to crawl onto land.
  • Creature stage (the old continent): pick fruit, explore the wilds and find ideas for new parts in old skeletons. Meet another species with a fruit as a gift and a creature that can sing, dance or show off to make a friend, or hunt it instead. Every encounter leaves a memory. Goal: feed memories to the brain until it reaches Lv5, then stack 3 creatures on it to found a tribe.
  • Tribal stage: chop, quarry, hunt and fish, roast meat on a campfire, make spears, axes, fishing spears, flutes and drums, and raise children in huts. Three tribes live nearby: bring food and play music to make allies, or take spears and conquer them. Goal: unite all three tribes, raise a totem pole and found a city.
  • Civilization stage: farms, bakeries, timberland, quarries, mines, spice derricks, factories, temples and markets. The factory makes steel and vehicles: trade trucks to trade, missionary vans to preach, armoured cars to take a city by force; any of the three can unite the other cities. Goal: unite the planet and build the rocket at the city hall.
  • Space stage: send ships to scan unknown systems, mine asteroids and planets, found colonies with pods and terraform them into garden worlds. Two alien empires can be talked into an alliance or fought. Goal: upgrade the warp drive to its third level, break into the galactic core, beat its guardian and take the Staff of Life to bring a silent world to life.

Rules

  • Difficulty: pick Easy, Normal or Hard for a new game, and change it any time in Settings. Easier means longer cycles (more time to gather before each meal), fewer and weaker roaming enemies, wild animals that bite back less, and a higher card limit; on Easy a unit that misses one meal only loses half its health, and starves only after two in a row. Hard is the first release's balance; Normal is best for a first game.
  • Cycles and meals: each stage has its own clock (tide, season, day, moon, year, stardate). When a cycle ends every unit eats its share of the food on the table; those left hungry starve, the fed ones heal fully. 🍽️ at the top shows food on the table against food eaten this cycle. Vehicles need no food; starships use supplies.
  • Card limit: the table holds only so many cards (🃏); storage buildings raise the limit. If you are over it when a cycle ends, time stops until you sell or discard the extra cards.
  • Selling and packs: drag cards to Sell (bottom right) for money (DNA in the first three stages, then shells, coins and credits) and buy packs with it. Click a pack on the table to pop out its cards: resources, new ideas, and now and then an enemy. Quests unlock better packs.
  • Ideas: the recipes on the main path are known from the start; parts, tools and buildings come out of packs or are found by trying stacks. Every recipe you find goes into Ideas 💡.
  • Fights: enemies come looking for you. Units and enemies that meet start fighting on their own, and you can drag more units into the fight. If you are losing, give units parts or weapons first and send several together. Units out of a fight slowly heal.
  • Wild animals: a unit on its own hunts the animal; a gift first and then a unit with the right skill befriends it. Companions work and fight too.
  • Parts, tools and gear: drag them onto a unit to equip, one per slot. Click a unit to see its slots and take things off.
  • Tribes, cities and empires: win them over peacefully (a gift first, then a unit that plays, trades or preaches, a few times over) or attack (a dialog tells you how strong they are first). Factions you have not united raid you now and then; once united, they send you something every cycle.
  • Nature: how you play a stage gives your species a head start in the next one. Eat mostly algae as cells and your swimmers start with an extra kelp forest; eat mostly plants in the sea and your creatures befriend animals faster; hunt a lot as creatures and your tribespeople hit harder; conquer every tribe and your civilization starts with an armoured car.
  • Random events: in the first five stages the planet sometimes does something big when a cycle ends; it shows as an event card on the table with the cycles it has left. Bad ones: an asteroid strike (two cards swept away, every unit hurt, a crater full of rare materials, then two cycles of impact winter), an ice age (every unit eats 1 more food and gathering slows; the retreating ice leaves food) and an axis shift with short seasons. Good ones: long seasons, a warm spell (faster gathering), a meteor shower (rare materials), a bounty (food) and a migration (prey). On Easy, bad events come half as often.
  • Extinction: if your last unit dies, you can try the stage again from its start. In space your homeworld keeps you going and can build a new ship.

Controls

  • Dragging: hold a card and drop it on another; dragging a card from the middle of a stack takes it and everything on top of it. While dragging, a hint at the top says what will happen when you let go.
  • Reading cards: hover a card (tap on a phone) to see what it is, its numbers, its uses and how to get it.
  • Packs: click a pack on the table to pop out a card.
  • Moving around: drag empty space to pan, scroll or pinch to zoom.
  • Keys: Space pauses, 1, 2 and 3 set the speed, B opens Ideas, Esc closes a panel.
  • Sound: the speaker in the top bar mutes everything; the menu turns music or effects off on their own.

Tips

  • Glance at 🍽️ before a cycle ends. If food is short, send someone to gather, and do not craft with your last food.
  • In the cell stage the sunlit shallows grow algae by themselves, and an algae clump put on them grows a new algae mat: your steadiest food.
  • One cell cannot beat a spiky microbe; two together beat it easily. Before an epic monster arrives, give your units parts.
  • Resources keep being worked until they run out, and vents, farms and mines never do: leave a unit there and you have a production line.
  • When the table is full, sell duplicate materials and spare resources first, not what the main path needs.
  • Before attacking a city, make sure your vehicles clearly outmatch its guards in attack and health. If you would rather not fight, trade and faith unite cities too.

FAQ

Is my game saved?

Every few seconds, at the end of every cycle and whenever you close or leave the page, the game is saved in this browser, and you are asked whether to continue when you come back. Every stage also has a checkpoint at its start: Restart this stage in the menu.

How long is a game?

From cell to the ending takes about an hour and a half to two hours the first time; the tribal stage is the longest. Leave whenever you like and carry on later.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Phones open zoomed in on the middle of the table; drag empty space to look around and pinch to zoom. Tapping a card opens its details at the bottom.

I am stuck. What now?

Read the quests and the goal at the top left, click cards to see their uses and look through Ideas. Short of materials, buy a pack; short of money, sell spare cards.

Version notes

Update, 2026-10-05: a sixth stage, the Ocean stage, between the cell and creature stages (the ancient sea: swimmers, kelp forests, krill, trilobites, nautiluses, anomalocaris and a dunkleosteus; grow a lung and lobed fins to crawl ashore); three difficulty levels, Easy, Normal and Hard, where Hard is the original balance; random event cards (asteroid strike, ice age, axis shift, warm spell, meteor shower, bounty, migration) that change the environment: cycle length, how much units eat, how fast gathering goes; the opening pack now holds an amino acid, so the first protein never gets stuck.

First release, 2026-10-05: five stages, 156 cards, 110 recipes, 20 packs, 56 quests, traits passed down the stages, fights, befriending and conquest, alien empires and an ending; music for every stage and sound effects; Chinese and English, on desktop and phone. Card illustrations are still being painted; icons stand in for now.
